STUDY DAY

Photography in 19th Century China and Japan

Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum

07 Oct

In the 1870s Andrew Carnegie travelled around the world, starting from Japan and China. He acquired albumen prints both by local and western photographers (such as Lai Afong, Felice Beato, Milton Miller, Shuzaburo Usui, Uchida Kuichi and Baron von Stillfried). No research has been done into the contents of Carnegie’s photo albums since they entered the collection in 1995. This study day brings together leading scholars of Chinese and Japanese art and photography in Scotland with an aim to introduce this fascinating collection to a wider audience. Booking necessary.

This event is supported by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.
