The Street Wise Photography of David Peat

Talk by David Bruce

The Byre Theatre

10 Sep 5.30pm

David Peat (1947-2012) was an outstanding cinematographer and documentary film-maker. In that capacity, he made films and television programmes that gained many awards and led to him being recognised personally by BAFTA for his remarkable contribution to the moving image media. But there was another dimension to Peat's achievement, one which even he did not fully recognise until the last years of his too-short life: the talent and observational skills which served him so well seeing life through the movie camera lens also made him an extremely gifted street photographer. His initial exercise in that medium was a 1968 portfolio to get him a job in television but throughout the rest of his life he compulsively shot stills whenever and wherever in the world he could snatch a moment. The result was some of the most illuminating and charming street photography of our time. David Bruce FRPS is a former Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Scottish Film Council. He was for many years Chairman of the Scottish Society for the History of Photography. The event is free but booking is required.
