Workshop of the Empire

North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre, Motherwell

09 Sep - 04 Nov

Fascinating images from North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre's Archive and Local History Collections highlight the companies and the workers that helped North Lanarkshire achieve its status as a major industrial powerhouse in the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century

We marvel at the skill, ingenuity and sheer physical effort exerted by miners working at the coalface, steel workers hand-charging at furnaces, wagon-builders and boiler makers on the shop floor. We celebrate the quality and variety of the goods they produced for a global market and explore their journey to a modern industrial workforce.
