EILEAN | ISLAND began life as a field diary, a sketchbook of observations and conversations from time spent on visits to the Isle of Lewis. In the first instance the field diary takes the form of a blog, informing the final works which consist of drawing, photography, moving image and poetry.
The opening event will be in the fish shed in Stornoway harbour where there will also be a performance element in the form of song and story by Ian Stephen, Kirsty Law and guest artists. The intention of the project is to highlight this extraordinary island on the physical edge of Scotland, including its people and the stoic individuals who have have chosen to remain on the island in spite of greater opportunities elsewhere. It looks at the relationship between people and place, language and landscape.
